Intent
English is such a vital subject for all children to be proficient and confident with in its own right, but it clearly has a major impact on their ability to make good progress in many other subjects (history, geography, religious studies etc). That is why we aim to do more than help them to be proficient. We want them to develop a love of English – writing and reading – at Hepworth by promoting a real passion for reading and a structured yet creative way of writing.
Implementation
Reading at Hepworth is centred around whole class reading/reciprocal reading, which is carried out on a daily basis and is supplemented by small group and where appropriate or necessary 1:1 reading. Through our close links to a local book shop (see below) we aim to foster a love of reading and a growing awareness of a range of authors, genres and styles of books.
When developing their writing at Hepworth children are given the scaffolding help of a system known as DADWAVERS and in the next academic year they will begin to benefit from the skills and techniques fostered by Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’.
Impact
We want all pupils to be proficient readers when they leave us and to have a love for reading which will help them to fulfill their potential in all written subjects and to open their minds to the endless worlds of fiction and the knowledge of non-fiction texts. We want to reverse the general decline in writing ability in children by providing stimulating texts on which to base their work upon and to be comfortable in writing for a variety of purposes and audiences. Our reading results are consistently high at Hepworth and with next years adoption of Talk for Writing we are confident that our writing results will also be boosted.

Phonics

Phonics is taught every day in Reception to Year 2. Pupils are taught their sounds in small, ability organised groups.
All Year 1 pupils take a 'phonics check' assessment at the end of the year and will continue to work on these sounds if they don't reach the required threshold.
