- Intent
At Hepworth J & I School Religious Education encourages students to learn from different religions, beliefs, values and traditions while exploring their own beliefs and questions of meaning. Through Religious Education students are encouraged to develop their sense of identity and belonging. Our intent is that Religious Education at Hepworth encourages learning about religions and from religions and also considers non-religious/Humanist aspects.
We want to equip all students with the ability to think for themselves as they study religions. To be open minded to other points of view and to identify and challenge misconceptions and prejudice. To listen to each other and not be afraid of making their own voice heard, justifying their viewpoint with reasoned consideration. We aim to encourage students to be critical thinkers and develop their literacy ability in order to debate controversial issues without causing offense to others. We want students to be inspired by Religious Education and motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of those around them.
RE plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHE, in promoting social awareness and understanding in our children. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens. Our curriculum is designed to encourage creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independence.
- Implementation
- Visits to places of worship take place to Hepworth Church, Jamia Masjid Noor [Mosque], Guru Nanak Gurdwara, and a Synagogue/Holocaust Museum in Manchester.
- RE is based on the locally agreed syllabus in Kirklees and this will be reviewed in 2024.
- RE will reflect the religious traditions in Britain, which are, in the main, Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Britain.
- At Hepworth Christianity, Islam and Sikhism are studied in depth as these religions represent the majority in Huddersfield.
- Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Humanist aspects are also studied from early Years to Year 6.
- Impact:
The children at Hepworth J and I School enjoy learning about other religions and why people choose, or choose not to follow a religion. Through their learning, they are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world, developing an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life. As such, Religious Education is invaluable in an ever changing and shrinking world.
